Stephen Alltop has built a career based on excellence in several disciplines, conducting both orchestral and choral ensembles, and performing as a keyboard artist. He assumed the role of Music Director for the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra in 1996 and was named the Illinois Council of Orchestras’ Conductor of the Year in 2012 for his work with the Elmhurst Symphony. Under Dr. Alltop’s leadership, the orchestra has expanded its presentations to venues in five different communities, has developed an extensive educational outreach program and has received recognition from the Illinois Council of Orchestras for innovative programming, volunteer activities and overall achievement.
Dr. Alltop is also music director of the Apollo Chorus of Chicago, Green Lake Choral Institute and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. He has been a member of the conducting faculty of Northwestern University since 1992 where he conducts the Baroque Music Ensemble and the Alice Millar Chapel Choir. Dr. Alltop has also appeared extensively as keyboard soloist, orchestral and chamber musician, and recording artist.
